Paints and Coatings
Its outstanding properties make Pigment Carbon Black the most commonly used black pigments in the paint, coating and lacquer industry. They are used for masstone coloring in pure black coatings (e.g., in automotive basecoats), for tinting in gray coatings and paints (e.g., in decoration), and for light tinting in transparence coatings (e.g., for metallic effects and wood glazing).
The variety of different manufacturing processes at Xinyuan creates the differences in morphological and chemical properties of the Pigment Carbon Black, which gives their unique behavior. The positive effect of oxidative post-treatment of Pigment Carbon Black surface plays a crucial role primarily in solvent borne coating systems.
Selection criteria for Pigment Carbon Black used in lacquers. The application parameters required for quality evaluation and assurance, such as dispersion and wetting behavior, pigment concentration, conductivity, UV protection and weather stability as well as coloristic values like jetness or tinting strength, are to a large degree determined by the following criteria:
- Mean primary particle size
- Surface chemistry
- Structure
Solvent Borne Coatings
The use of oxidized Pigment Carbon Black in solvent borne coatings is advantageous versus non-oxidized Pigment Carbon Black.
Oxidative post-treatment functionalizes the Pigment Carbon Black surface with oxidic groups, which enhances the polarity of the pigment surface. A more polar Pigments Carbon Black surface is wetted more easily by binder and/or wetting and dispersing additives, which leads to a better stabilization of the pigment. Specifically:
- Dispersion
- Rheology
- Color depth
- Tone
- Pouring characteristics
- Gloss and haze.
Water Borne Coatings
In water borne coatings non or weak oxidized Pigment Carbon Black are recommended. These Pigment Carbon Black can be stabilized well in the alkaline medium of water borne systems. Best coloristic values and an optimal stability performance can be achieved by using Furnace Pigment Carbon Black with extremely small mean primary particle size and a narrow aggregate distribution
Powder Coatings
In two different powder coating systems – epoxy/carboxyl-functional polyester hybrid and carboxyl-functional polyester/HAA (beta-hydroxyalkylamide) – the Xinyuan portfolio of Pigment Carbon Black was evaluated. Depending on the application (masstone coloring or tinting) Furnace Pigment Carbon Black with different mean primary particle sizes were recommended. For a typical powder coating thickness values of 60 μm to 80 μm and Pigment Carbon Black concentration of 1 to 2 percent are sufficient to obtain opaque films. Overall the use of beaded Pigment Carbon Black is favorable due to the low dust and better handling.
